Molds and Tooling

Every thermoformed part needs a mold. Let Matrix guide you toward the best type of mold for your parts, and have it built to your specifications.

Production molds are typically made out of cast or machined aluminum.  Size and complexity of design are the two main factors in determining mold cost.  A small, simple production mold can cost as little as $1,000.  If you purchase an aluminum production mold from Matrix, you will never be charged for maintenance or repairs.

Prototyping molds can be built to run a few parts.  These molds are typically made out of wood or epoxy and cost significantly less than production tools.  The downside to using wood molds is that they wear out very quickly, requiring repairs or replacement.  Matrix does charge for maintenance and repairs to wood molds.

Other potential tooling costs include fixtures to be used for cooling, drilling, routing, etc. and sometimes special packaging.  These costs (if applicable) vary greatly depending on the type of parts involved.
